Legacy Amidst Change: Hutong Life in Old Beijing

In this poignant image, we meet the patriarch of a Hutong family in Old Beijing, China. Sitting with a cigarette in hand, he gazes at a Chinese checkers board before him. This intimate encounter occurred as I explored his ancestral home in a vanishing Hutong, where generations have resided. In the backdrop of Beijing's rapid urbanization, traditional Hutong neighborhoods, rich in culture, are fading away to make room for towering skyscrapers, underscoring the poignant contrast of old and new.
